A commission to fill some antique frames led to many works on canvases of the same size as the frames. These frames came from a cathedral in Checkoslovakia. They had numbers in a crest on the carving overhead. They must once have held pictures depicting the stations of the cross.
The stations of the cross are depicted in music in works called `Passions’ where the final words of Christ are sung. I feel there is something spiritual and amazing about the shape and size of these frames and therefore of the canvases. I have been mesmerized with the problems of this shape when painting seascapes. This was inspired by their suggestion early on …. that I paint scenes from San Remo in Victoria. I did many such scenes. Some 14 in full size and many smaller ones. This one is one of the more successful. But there are several others closely related that draw on our inner responses to rhythms of light in different ways.
